Covering Local Fashion in Fredonia & Buffalo

My Comments on this NYT Article “The 25 Shoes and Bags that Transformed Fashion”

Shoes are so important in our everyday lives that many people overlook them. For me, shoes are the first thing I notice about a person. Over the years, shoe styles have changed and been brought back.

The Margiela tabi is an example of this. They were made over 30 years ago, and newer generations are eager to get their hands on a pair.

Many heels are mentioned in this article, but my childhood favorite has to be Candies. They released the chunky slide heel, which was worn by celebrities like Hilary Duff and Destiny’s Child. Candies was that brand you could find at stores like Kohl’s or your local thrift store, yet it was still all the rage.

As for bags, the Hermès Birkin will go down in history as “the bag”. If you have a significant other, you’ll probably want them to buy this for you. Depending on the style and condition, the Birkin can sell anywhere from $20,000 to $2,000,000.

The Balenciaga “Le City” bag is another iconic piece seen on off-duty models like Kate Moss. I personally need this bag in my collection. It’s one of those bags that can be used for anything and any occasion.

Timberlands, aka “Timbs,” might be the most classic shoe I can think of, aside from a good pair of Jordans or Adidas shoes. Timbs are so versatile that they’ve earned their spot as a classic. Pictured above is A$AP Nast, a rapper from A$AP Mob, known for his creative style. This photo posted just a few days ago, shows him rocking a classic pair of Timberlands. You can find a pair of these in just about any local thrift store, which demonstrates how many people own them.

A book I started reading a couple of years ago, Fashion Killa by Sowmya Krishnamurthy, covers all areas of designers and hip-hop culture in the late ’90s and early 2000s. This article reminded me of the classic fashion pieces we have to appreciate from these times. I highly recommend reading this book alongside this article.
